My daughter’s finished room
A few months ago my twelve year old daughter came to me and asked for a room makeover. She wanted a “teenager” bedroom. I’m not going to lie, I was a little sad, this is my youngest which means no more “little kid” rooms. That being said, I always love a great room makeover. So we came up with a plan, and went to work. This is what the room looked like before…very very girly. Like a six year old picked things out right? I guess an update was due. First thing we did was pick a bedspread, then the wall color. She wanted a gray bedspread and I…

A one of a kind shelf
So it a while back I found this great architectural piece of wood at my local antique store. When I say a while back, I mean probably a year or more ago. Every time I went into this store I wanted to buy this piece and create something with it. A few weeks ago I got my chance. A few weeks back I made a few changes to my family room and bought an old radio. This started kind of a spiral of sorts. I had a chair where the old radio was, so I had to move the chair to the wall where my cool arrow hung. Since I moved the…

Picking and fixing
Doing my daughters room has been interesting….fun, but interesting. The last time I decorated her room, she was ten and basically told me what colors she wanted. This time, it is a whole different story. Danica wants things the way Danica wants them. Actually she has a great eye for design, so it is actually fun having her pick out her own stuff and it is fun to have another partner in crime. So a while back we were picking at my favorite antique store and came across this desk. It was in rough shape, but the lines were good, so we got it for Danica’s room. It was love at…

re purposing a bed
I have been busy working on my daughter’s room. I have the room painted, her desk prepped, and I found a great bed for her. When I am working on a room I always look for used items that I can re purpose. Either things I already have, or things at antique stores. I went shopping the other day and found this great head board and foot board. I loved the lines on them, and I knew it would be perfect for my daughter’s room. Here’s the thing…it was only 39 bucks. I couldn’t pass it up. It was well built, and I knew I could put a little effort into…

How to make something from nothing
I finished my console and I am so excited to share the entire process. I love looking up paint tutorials and learning different ways to paint furniture. Even though I learn about different techniques and ways to paint, I consistently go back to the way I have been painting furniture and cabinets for years. This way works for me, I love the finish, and it holds up well. So here is the cabinet that I bought a couple of weeks ago. It was dated, and dirty! I got it for a killer price and originally brought it home to paint and sell it. I put it in the garage to prep…

A bit of spray paint
I can’t believe it is November already. Time is flying. I love the fall, and decorating for it is so much fun. That being said, I also love Christmas, and decorating for that is a lot more fun. So every November 1st I start thinking about how I want to decorate. Little touches I want to change from previous years, or crafts I want to do. This week I have been thinking about my porch. I have had this fun lantern for years now and it has recently been out in my back yard. I painted it yellow so that it would stand out in the yard. I cleaned all…

Think outside the box
When I decorate a space and start investing in accessories for that space I try to find things that are a little unique, maybe something that everyone might not have. This fun lantern is an example of that. When I was on the hunt to find some lighting for my family room I quickly became discouraged. Everything looked the same to me, same lamp, same shade, same same same. It was so boring to me. That is when I saw this fun lantern. It was intended to hold a candle, but we saw it a different way. When I picked it up at the store, my hubby said that would…

Vintage love
The new year has been busy around these parts. Christmas was great…winter was long!! Spring is upon us, and I feel like refreshing, cleaning, and organizing all my rooms. We finished our house in the fall, so I used all my fall décor to decorate the new rooms. Then I did the same thing at Christmas time. By the time I took down all my Christmas décor, I realized that I didn’t have anything to fill up my new spaces. So I of course had to do a little shopping. I had donated most of my old décor to the DI, so I was starting over. I knew I wanted…

My fun clock project
About twelve years ago my hubby built me a clock for Christmas. I love this clock, and have been looking for the perfect place to put it in our home. After we got the wood done in the upstairs hall, we decided the natural spot for the clock would be in the hall. I was so excited, the only problem was the paint color. The color that I had painted it matched the rooms in our old home, not this one. I am keeping the hallway pretty neutral, just black and white photos, even the chair in the landing is black and white. I knew I wanted a pop of…

Another painting project
I did a lot of painting in my bedroom. One of my favorite pieces that I painted was actually my bed side table or cabinet. I can’t believe I didn’t take a before picture. I was in such a hurry to get my room done, I just grabbed a paint brush and went to work. This piece use to be black everywhere. It even had black wooden knobs. I painted it the same white as the fireplace and trim with my satin trim paint. I took an electric sander and distressed the heck out of it. I found these great knobs in Shelley and was actually going to use them…

Giving things new life
I love finding items and giving them new life. Creating something with them to use them a different way than was intended. It is a fun creative outlet. This project was actually my hubby’s idea. We had bought this lantern at Hobby Lobby to use as an accessory on a shelf in our room. We were looking for a lamp for our night stand and decided this would work great as a lamp. With a little drilling and electrical it became a lamp just like that. Another fun idea is to re purpose old windows or doors as picture frames. I found a window that fit 8×10 mats to display…

My Ikea hack
So here I am again posting another fun thing from our bedroom. This is my first Ikea hack, and I am excited to share it. When we were first designing our room, we wanted some book shelves to go on either side of our fireplace. I found these at Ikea. They were just standard bookshelves stained a cream color. I knew I needed to paint them since the white clashed so bad with the white in my room. So we went to work painting them….the first time. A beautiful shade of deep gray. Notice, the gray is only on the insides. We did not use any primer or liquid sand…

Mixing some old with some new
December is over and January is a new month and a new year. December was a whirlwind for me this year, and although I got a lot done in my house, I didn’t get a lot done on my blog. We have been working on our master bedroom the past couple of months. My older post showed my room painted, and the ceiling painted as well. I painted the room Silver sage from Restoration hardware. I love the color, so calming and relaxing. One of the fun new additions I put in the room was a new fireplace. It is a real flame fireplace. It burns a real fire using…

Painting cabinets
I recently had the opportunity to teach a class about furniture and cabinet painting and re finishing. This was such a fun topic to talk about. Finding old and dis-guarded furniture and giving it new life is what I love doing most. My family jokes with me that besides my piano, no piece of furniture is safe around here. It is true. What better way to transform a room than to give the pieces in that room some new life. If you can do that for just a few bucks worth of paint….even better right. Here are some fun tips and tricks I have learned along the way through my…
