It’s a paint party
One of the first things we did for this theater room is to prime and paint everything white. I always use either Kilz, or in this case, I used Zinzer brand primer. It really neutralized that horrible blue color. The can lights are in and waiting to be painted around, and all the molding is done and painted in a pure white satin paint. My hubby built the columns the go along the wall, and even added a little bit of light in them for a fun touch. He found LED lights that you can cut and have adhesive backing so he could stick them in the openings of the…

Covering that color!
We bought this house with the intent of remodeling everything. Some rooms in the house are better than others. There are defiantly two that tied for the worst. The girl’s bathroom, and our theater room. We decided that the first level we are finishing is the basement, and the theater room is on that level. Here is the beautiful before…the day we moved in picture of this lovely room. The picture seriously isn’t doing the room justice. The color is so dark, and the only lighting in the whole room are those sconces. It is a long dark dungeon. We put can lighting in the ceiling, and went to town…

Pop of color
We moved into this house two years ago with the intention of re-doing just about everything. This is not our first house reno and we are very seasoned DIYers. This house is just taking longer to complete than I hoped it would. There were a lot of not so fun projects that we needed to take care of first. I was prepared to be patient, live with the house the way it was until we got to each room, but I couldn’t do it any longer. I had to make a minor change on my main level to stay sane this winter. I had to do something with the dark…

All wrapped up
I can’t believe that the start of school is approaching. It always has a way of sneaking up on me. I start to panic when I think of the start of school, because that means that the holidays are just around the corner. For the past few (a lot) of years I have had issues with storing my wrapping paper. With the completion of my craft room, I was determined to have a place to both organize and store all my wrapping supplies. I have seen so many wonderful ideas on pinterest and I was debating on whether or not to incorporate the wrapping station right into the room, or…

Go Bold
It is pretty and hot here today. Put me right in the mood to show my bright additions to my yard. If you are scared of color, the yard is a perfect place to start playing and adding color to your home. I wanted to go bright this year and decided to use reds, apple greens, turquoises, and yellows to make my yard pop. The yard is such a fun place to add color because it is easy to do, and easy to change. I change colors every year by just using spray paint. We sprayed the black table red and found these way fun cushions at home goods. The…

Some words, a vignette, and a runner
I have been showing some finishing touches I have done to my craft room lately. As I came down the bottom of the stairs it was plain and lacking some personality. I had hung pictures in other parts of the room and basement, and I didn’t want the space to feel like a gallery. I decided to get on my silhouette, and with my hubby’s help, I found my favorite quote and cut it out with vinyl. Most of the words except the word create were cut out in Navy blue and I decided to do the word create in a gray color with a different font. I love this…

Zucchini Bruchetta
It has been so hot around here lately and that means that the gardens are growing and producing all kinds of vegetables. I am sharing my now favorite way to prepare zucchini. I was visiting Rome a while back and was served several different types of bruchetta. When I tasted the one topped with zucchini, I about died. So dang delicious! I had to re-create that recipe at home for sure. This is what I came up with. Zucchini Bruchetta Two medium zucchini diced Two or three cloves of garlic (your own personal taste) 1 Tablespoon of fresh thyme leaves salt to taste Olive oil to coat 1 to 2…

Finishing touches
I have been gone for the week on a family vacation. We had a great time visiting the Oregon coast. The ocean was cool and beautiful. A refreshing break from our hundred degree weather. I have been working on some finishing touches for my craft room. I love putting the general room together, then stepping back and adding some fun touches like curtains. These are one of my favorite things to add. My room started with my chair and moved on from there. I knew I wanted to add another fun fabric and pattern, and had just the place to start with. I found this old screen at an antique…

DIY Cupcake stands
I was in desperate need….want for cupcake stands to display some cupcakes I made for the fourth of July. I couldn’t find any that I loved, so I decided to make a couple of my own. We were in Bed Bath and Beyond and I found plastic plates on sale for just 99 cents. Who could beat that? I grabbed enough plates and cups to make two of them. I loved the square floral plates and the green bowl and circle plate. It had a whimsical look to it. I was trying to decide what to put in the middle, when we found the matching drinking cups and decided to…

Dreamy ice cream dessert
It has been hot here, and when it is hot we love ice cream. One of my favorite ice cream desserts is this yummy recipe I am about to share. I had it at a party at my friend’s home years ago and it quickly became one of my very favorites. It is a hit no matter where you take it, or who eats it. It all starts with a half gallon of vanilla ice cream. This needs to be softened, so leave it on the counter while you mix the rest. You will need rice crispies, coconut, butter, brown sugar, and walnuts. Mix together 2 cups of the rice…

Finished Craft Room
It was a lot of work, but we finished. We took a basement that had an awkward layout Tore out the wall of one bedroom and created a fun and way functional new family craft room. We installed laminate hand scraped acacia flooring. I decided to go with laminate in the basement instead of wood just for the practicality. I wanted a space we could glue in, paint in, and just have fun in without worrying about carpet. We put a butter color on the walls, and painted the cabinets white. I found the knobs at hobby lobby and decided I needed a pop of color. I sprayed the knobs…

Re purposing furniture
Painting furniture…one of my favorite things. I love how a piece of furniture can change so drastically with just a can of paint. A while ago my daughter had an armoire in her old bedroom that stored her clothes. We have since moved and did a whole different bedroom for her and she did not need to use that armoire. I decided that it would be great if I could put that piece of furniture in my craft room and use it for a sewing cabinet. The only problem was the paint color. I had painted it pink and creme originally, and those just weren’t going to be the colors…

My French Door Table
When I started this craft room process, I wanted a table coming out into the center of the room. A lot like a kitchen island. I wanted to be able to use my sewing machine and have room to pull fabric through, kid’s school projects that seem to always use poster board, and just have a space where more than one person could be sitting comfortably doing a project together. We looked into doing cabinets that resembled a kitchen island, or buying a table to go in the center. Both were pretty expensive, and kind of generic to me. We came up with the idea to use a French door…

Painting cabinets
My room is taking shape and I am excited to get cabinets put in. We painted a valspar paint on the walls called butter. Yellow is hard to pick, and this is the perfect shade of yellow for me. Not to bright, but still very happy. I always paint my walls with an eggshell finish, and my trim with a satin finish. We decided to go with the unfinished stock cabinets for this room. I thought to myself, I will just paint them quickly and get them installed…no problem. They are trickier than they look. I have painted so many finished cabinets in my day, and these are a little…

DIY wall texturing
We tore down the basement wall, and it left a big mess we had to fix. We have had people come and texture our walls in the past, but we haven’t been satisfied with their work. My husband and I decided to do it ourselves this time. Jeff has always done the walls on his own. Fairly simple. He put up new drywall, mud, and used the orange peel texture spray found at Home Depot. The ceiling was another matter entirely. We had a funky texture on the ceiling that couldn’t be matched with the texture rollers, so we got some mud, and paint scraper, and went to work. It…
