    Painting cabinets

I recently had the opportunity to teach a class about furniture and cabinet painting and re finishing. This was such a fun topic to talk about. Finding old and dis-guarded furniture and giving it new life is what I love doing most. My family jokes with me that besides my piano, no piece of furniture is safe around here. It is true.  What better way to transform a room than to give the pieces in that room some new life. If you can do that for just a few bucks worth of paint….even better right.  Here are some fun tips and tricks I have learned along the way through my…

    Finishing touches

I am so happy to say that we are done, finished, and there is nothing left to do with the girl’s bathroom makeover. I am over the moon with how it turned out! It was defiantly one of the worst rooms in our home, and now it is one of my favorites. The moldings were the last detail in the room. I painted them and my husband installed them. I decided to frame the mirror with white molding. We also added white chair rail to top the V board. It is amazing what molding does to finish off a room. I painted the molding before we put it up and…

It’s bright and I love it!

I am so close to being finished with my game room. We have been working on it for a couple of weeks, adding paint, wainscoting, desks, game tables…you name it. Except for the trim and a few touches the room is finally done. Here is the before…dull and boring. Just a blank space. Here it is now…bright and full of color! I wanted big pops of color in this room so I added a lot of turquoise, reds, and bright greens. It is a game room, so we wanted to make it fun. We have a place to watch TV, do homework, and have fun playing games. I found this…

Easiest change in a room…painting furniture

We have been working on our game room these past few weeks. I have to say that my favorite part of any room is picking out and painting the color.  I chose a soft yellow butter color for my walls, my furniture is red, and I needed to pick a third pop of color to really ground the room.  I found this console well over a year ago at the DI for not much money at all.  I knew I needed a place to put the TV on and this was just the piece I needed for the room. This is a classic example of an old seventies piece of…

    Fun and games

It is starting to feel a little like spring around here, and sunshine and longer days always make me feel like a project. We have moved on to our game room. It is a large room above our garage that I want to make into a cozy, bright, and fun hang out for the kids. Here is what it looked like before. It had tons of potential, and I loved that angles on the walls.  The very first thing to go was that awful window air conditioner. The next thing we did in this room was build this closet. The original closet was turned into our laundry room, so I…

    Buttercream

Making progress on the bathroom and I am almost done. Just waiting on some finishing trim, and hanging some mirrors we bought, and this bathroom reno is done. The before…So so so awful! Now the after. I got the vanity painted, the counter top in, and new pulls on the cabinet. I love how it turned out.  I painted the cabinet a valspar color called butter, and the walls school boy blue. We found the chandeliers at Ikea. We are still installing molding around the mirror, and found some cool black girly oval mirrors to install on top of the large mirror. The color choices were my daughters, but I…

    Holy Bathroom Batman

The hall bathroom. Seriously the worst room of my entire home. I don’t know where to begin, from the dark brown tiles to the forest green paint on the walls…all of it is so horrible!   The tile on the floor was uneven and you had to step up on the tile to get into the shower room.  So dark…and it was a bathroom for two girls. Not girly at all.  Oh my gosh, when we got these walls painted, the room felt totally transformed.  We put the same black and white basket weave tile that we put in our basement bathroom and painted the walls a light gray blue…

    Throw back Thursday

My twelve year old daughter went to school today wearing leg warmers, ratted hair, purple eyeshadow, and everything else that entails dressing in the eighties.  It was throw back Thursday at her school today.  She was so excited, and it got me thinking about all the fun things I have worked on in all the other houses I have lived in.  Some of my favorite things to do when I move into a house is to add color.  As I am re doing this house, I love to see all the different rooms and color that I added to other places I have lived in. This was one of my…

    finishing touches

Now that my laundry room is done, I have had a lot of fun finding some fun pieces and putting all the finishing touches together for the room. I knew I needed a folding table for that room and we toyed around with a lot of different possibilities.  We thought about putting lower cabinets in and making a table on top of them, or making a table out of wood and glass.  So we were out shopping at Fred Meyer one day, and came across a stool height table/counter for less money than we could make one.  It had the glass top that I wanted to make the room feel…

    Re locating the laundry

I can’t believe it has been since October since I have last posted. I have missed blogging and taking pictures of our projects.  Life has been busy…work, school, play, Christmas…you name it. I am excited to show one of more recent projects, my laundry room.  When we bought the home, the laundry was located on the main floor next to the kitchen and I wanted to eventually use that space for a mud room.  There was a large walk in closet in the upper level of our house I wasn’t using. We thought about it and drew it up and decided to convert the closet into a laundry room.  I was…

    A flashback of color

I was looking through old pictures of my previous home, and I came across this one. I soon decided that I seriously miss this wall and the dose of color that it gave to this space.  This square wall was one of the funnest painting projects I have ever done.  It was not hard at all, and it gave the wall pattern and dimension without having to hang wallpaper. The trick to it was to use a laser level and draw the squares out with a pencil.  Then instead of taping the squares, I just painted the outline with a painter’s brush, and filled in the rest with a larger brush. …

    A touch of brick

Life has been crazy around here. It has been a while since my last post. We have been busy adding a little bit of exposed brick to our home. There is a landing in my stairs between my middle level and my basement level that I wanted to dress up for a long time. There was this shelf that came out from the wall. I wanted to put brick on the top and wainscoting on the bottom. We started by putting up some backer board, and went to work adding the brick. It is the thin brick perfect for walls. We were nervous about bricking a wall, but it actually…

    My basement bathroom make over

I can’t believe so many days have passed since I last posted. I haven’t found a minute since the start of school to sit down and blog. Last year we decided to renovate and completely gut our basement.  The very first project we did down there was the bathroom.  This room seriously needed a face lift. It started out just your typical basement bathroom. Nothing fancy. This is the before, right after we moved in.  It functioned fine, and served it’s purpose but it just wasn’t great to look at.  So we got to work gutting it out.  First we got rid of everything including the tub. Yea, everything was…

    The story of my console

Life has been so busy with the end of summer fun, school shopping, and school starting. I am finally happy that I have time to post on my most favorite topic. Re-finishing furniture. Now that my theater room is done, I have decided that the console I painted is one of my most favorite pieces I have done in a long time.  This piece of furniture was such a lucky find.  We knew that we wanted a built in unit for the television but didn’t know if we were going to go totally built in or find a cool piece to go in the middle.  We were walking around the…

Theater room – the finished product!

I am loving the new paint color of my theater room. I can’t believe how much the room has transformed from the dark blue room we moved into, to a more calming gray. I seriously thought there was no hope for this room when we moved into the house. Here is the before. A dark blue dungeon. Here it is after. I found a gray couch to match the walls and put two chairs on the upper step. We recently went to London, and I knew I wanted a London themed  room somewhere in my house. I figured this was the perfect room to do it since it was somewhere…
